The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has cautioned members of the public to desist from attempting to disarm military personnel on authorized duty as part of military support to the Ghana Police Service in restoring law and order across the country.
During the just-ended December 7 general elections, videos circulated on social media showing incidents where some civilians involved in scuffles with soldiers deployed to provide security attempted to disarm the military officers.
However, the GAF has cautioned that military personnel on authorized duty have the right to defend themselves, innocent civilians, and property, including the use of lethal force, if necessary, to preserve life.
A brief statement signed by the Director-General of Public Affairs, GAF, E. Aggrey-Quarshie, stated: "GAF wishes to once again encourage all Ghanaians to exercise their civic rights responsibly, cooperate with security personnel, and refrain from any acts that could disrupt the peace.
The GAF reiterates its commitment to safeguarding the stability and sovereignty of the nation."
