GAWU mobilises support on the right to food security

Accra, Jan. 25, GNA - The General Agricultural Workers' Union (GAW= U)has organised a workshop to mobilise and organise small scale farmers and agricultural workers to campaign for the right to food and food security in the country.

GAWU organised the workshop in collaboration with ActionAid Ghana, an international non-governmental organisation, to strengthen the participants with useful information and data to support the campaign. Mr Karim Saagbul, Programme Officer of GAWU told the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Accra on Tuesday that the union had trained rice farmers "on the systems of rice intensification as a sustainable rice production= " practice as well as the effect of climate change on agricultural production= .. He said GAWU with support from stakeholders had organised a signature campaign to be submitted to the Constitutional Review Commission on a proposal for inclusion of the right to food provision in the 1992 Constitution. Mr Saagbul said the union reviewed and evaluated some of its programme= s and activities and came out with strategies, plans and recommendations that would support the campaign.

He explained that the media also benefited from a capacity building "on the principles of the right to food" to enhance their knowledge on the issues and challenges. Mr Saagbul expressed the hope that this year, there would be massive support to campaign for the right to food and food security at all levels i= n the country.
