GCB donates to medical students and College of Surgeons

Accra, Feb. 14, GNA - Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) on Monday donated medical books worth 15.2 million cedis to the University of Ghana Medical Students' Association (UGMSA) and 10,000 dollars the West African College of Surgeons.

Mr Lawrence Adu-Mante, Acting Managing Director of the Bank said the books donation was in response to an appeal made by UGMSA. The 10,000 dollars was meant for the Advanced Trauma Operative Management (ATOM) course being organized by the College of Surgeons that enabled student surgeons to carry out surgery on animals to detect common injuries that occur during motor accidents.

Mr Adu-Mante said the ATOM course cost about 6,000 dollars in the US per student.

He said GCB was happy to be associated with the course in Ghana since, "it will enable our surgeons to acquire more skills in emergency surgical management".

Dr Rudolph Darko, Head of Surgery at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, commended GCB for the gesture and said the ATOM course would help save a lot of lives.

Mr Kwaku Asah-Opoku, President of UGMSA, said there was the need for a well-stocked library to facilitate the training of medical doctors.
