Wa, July 16, GNA - Ghana Education Service (GES) is to be decentralized under the new educational reforms, Mr Cletus Paaga, Upper West Regional Director of Education announced on Monday. He said at the district level, GES would be under the District Assemblies with a new name as Department of Education and at the regional level it would be known as Department of Education under the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC).
Mr Paaga was briefing teachers from Wa Municipality, Wa East and West Districts on the highlights of the reforms, which would be implemented on September 1 this year at Wa.
He explained that the assemblies and Regional Coordinating Councils would determine the recruitments promotions, sanctions and awards for teachers.
Mr Paaga announced that an independent National Inspectorate Board (NIB), which would be operating under the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports, would be established to formulate, set and enforce standards in all pre-tertiary institutions
The NIB would ensure all schools are inspected at least once every three years by trained inspection panels to ensure quality standards while Regional and District Directorates would be responsible for routine internal inspection and supervision. On challenges facing the reforms, Mr Paaga said provision of new textbooks and syllabi had been entrusted to the Curriculum Research Development Division (CRDD) of GES to make available to schools these materials before the take off.
