GFGL holds end of year thanksgiving service

Tarkwa (W/R) Dec. 20,-GNA- Gold Fields Ghana Limited (GFGL) has held its annual church service to give thanks and praise to God for a successful year and usher the New Year into the hands of God. It was attended by chiefs, Imams, Assemblymen, management and workers of GFGL.

Delivering the sermon, Rev Isaac Asare, Tarkwa District Pastor, Presbyterian Church Ghana (PCG), compared the Kingdom of Heaven to workers in the vineyard where some workers were paid equal wages but working for different hours and told the workers to be contended with whatever was due them, saying, "Heaven Knows no unfairness". He said on many occasions, workers grumble that management had not treated them well and said even in the midst of bitter complaints, there should be something that should be acknowledged. Rev. Asare said God has been faithful and generous to his people, even in time of uncertainties and therefore deserves thanksgiving and praises.

Mr. Peet Van Schalkwyck, general manager GFGL said in 2007, the Mine experienced fatalities but this year, the Mine worked hard to meet the set safety targets of zero fatality in compliance with both international and local standards and regulations. He said, the company has achieved numerous production records in the Mine and in the processing areas on daily and monthly basis, adding, "on the international front, the Mine has retained both International Association of Standards (ISO) 14001 Environmental rating and Occupational Health and Safety Series (OHSAS) 18001 rating and has also been certified under the International Cyanide Management Code (ICMC).

Mr Schalkwyck prayed for cordial relationship and good rapport with the stakeholder communities and other stakeholders grow from strength to strength with the passing years to enhance corporate responsibility of the Mine. He said with the prevalence peace and enabling environment, the company will not shirk its social responsibility but will continue to play its role as a good corporate entity.
