The United Nations has awarded peace medals to personnel of UNIFIL GHANBATT 80 as a show of appreciation for their contribution towards peace and stability in Southern Lebanon in a parade held on Thursday 16 October 2014 at the Battalion Headquarters in Al-Qawzah.
The guest of honour for the occasion Maj Gen Luciano Portolano, Force Commander and Head of Mission of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in his speech stated that “Ghana was one of the first countries to contribute troops to UNIFIL and has continued to show its support to peace in South Lebanon.
Ghanbatt 80 he said, had carried out its operations in its area of responsibility especially the Blue Line between Israel and South Lebanon with competence and high sense of duty. He further commended the battalion for their humanitarian assistance to the people in the form of medical care and English language lessons in the local schools and urged the Peacekeepers to wear their medals with pride and keep up the good work.
Maj Gen Portolano presented medals to the Commanding Officer of the Ghanbatt 80 Lt Col Selom Amengor and other officers of the Battalion. Among the dignitaries present were Ghana’s Consul General to Lebanon HE Michel Haddad, a military delegation from Ghana led by Chief of Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces Maj Gen Bobson Saagbul and senior officials of both the Lebanese Armed Forces and UNIFIL.
