Founding Dean of the Faculty of Law of the University of Cape Coast, Prof. Philip Ebow Bondzi-Simpson has called on government to provide the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) with all the needed resources to enable it properly deliver its mandate of building the capacity of the public sector.

Speaking at his investiture as the Rector of the Institute, Prof. Bondzi-Simpson said although GIMPA is a public tertiary institution, it is self-financing and doesn’t earn any government subvention.

He said even though there are some benefits to being self-financing, the institute does not have the freedom to operate as private institutions do nor the needed monetary support from government.

Prof. Bondzi-Simpson said, “all the strictures associated with fully funded state institutions are associated with us without the resources to accompany it. We cannot think this is sustainable not because we don’t earn and can’t earn our own but if GIMPA is established to build the capacity of the public sector then it must be resourced to do that”.

He called for an engagement with government to determine how the two bodies can work together for the sake of nation and capacity building.

“It is my charge to reopen the discussion; why did government set up GIMPA at all and what can we do to ensure that this original mandate is kept”, he said.

Prof Bondzi-Simpson also pledged to work diligently with the management team, staff and other stakeholders of the Institute to ensure the institute remains relevant in the country.
