The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has commended the Ghana Police Service for the arrest and prosecution of a key suspect in connection with the murder of investigative journalist, Ahmed Hussein-Suale.
The suspect, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, aka Amakye, was arraigned on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, but the Madina District Court remanded him in police custody to reappear on April 1, 2025.
According to a statement from the GJA, it said the group has been in touch with senior police officers to get details of the arrest and prosecution of the suspect.
It further applauded the Inspector General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno and the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, for revived swift steps towards unraveling the barbaric murder of the investigative journalist.
“We note that more than six years after the assassination of Ahmed Suale on January 16, 2019, this is the first time the police have made significant impact in respect of bringing the suspected killers of the investigative journalist to face justice.
“The arrest and prosecution of the suspect come on the back of persistent and relentless demand by the GJA,“ it said.
The GJA has, however, urged the police not to relent in their effort to rein in other suspects with the hope that the major breakthrough in the arrest and prosecution of Daniel Owusu Koranteng will only be the beginning of the long search for justice for Ahmed Hussein-Suale and relief for media freedom in Ghana and abroad.
The statement added that the death of the late journalist and the failure of the police to find his killers has been drawing back Ghana’s World Press Freedom Index over the past six years.
“We recall our ultimatum to take the Ahmed Hussein-Suale Case to the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) Community Court of Justice after the end of March 2025, if we do not see anything concrete by the police to find and prosecute his killers.
“In the coming days, we shall be engaging with the police leadership for more details about the prosecution of the suspect and further investigations into the murder case, after which we shall update the public on our intended march to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice,” the statement added.
The GJA also demanded that the police provides updates on investigations into the many cases of assault against journalists that have gone cold, including Latif Iddrisu’s case which has also been earmarked to be presented to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice.
Meanwhile, the GJA has informed its international partners, including the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), about the arrest and prosecution of the suspect and they have indicated their resolve to take the Ahmed Hussein-Suale case to other international forums to seek justice for the murdered investigative journalist.
