The Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) has pledged to support its members acquire their own houses.

President of the GJA Roland Affail Monney said most journalists in Ghana continue to wallop in poverty due to the poor remuneration and conditions under which they work, hence, making it virtually impossible for them to own a house.

Mr Monney said this at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Association and Koans Estate as part of the GJA's flagship programme dubbed: "GJA Media Village Project" in Accra on Monday, 9 April 2018.

Chairperson of the Project Committee Dr Doris Yaa Dartey, mentioned that non-journalists will not be permitted to own houses at the village. She also added that journalists will not be allowed to buy more than one house.

Chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC) Mr Kwesi Gyan Apenteng spoke about the need for quality.

According to him, quality will not be attained in the media landscape if the very people that ought to strive for quality live under poor conditions and are not well remunerated.

Likening Ghana to neighbouring countries, he called for legislation on the conditions of service for journalists.

Managing Director of Koans Building Estates, Mr Kofi Anokye noted that owning a house must not be a sole preserve of the rich, hence his partnership with the GJA to ensure that the average journalist owns a house.

He added that, Koans will continue to partner the media to provide housing solutions for journalists.
