GJA urged to develop satisfactory pension plan for Ghanaian journalists

Ghanaian journalist Afia Pokuaa, popularly known as Vim Lady, has called on the President of the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) to establish a satisfactory pension plan for journalists in the country.

During an interview on Kofi TV, the seasoned broadcaster expressed concern about how some Ghanaian journalists leave their jobs to seek better opportunities due to what she describes as an inadequate pension plan.

She believes that with a proper policy implemented by the GJA, Ghanaian journalists would be more likely to remain in their home country.

"The reason why many journalists in the country are leaving to find better opportunities is due to the economy. Not all media houses in the country have a proper pension plan or tier 2 pension. When journalists realise they are growing older without a reliable source of income or pension plan, they tend to leave," she explained.

"I urge the President of the Ghana Journalist Association to establish a good pension plan for journalists, and media houses in the country should prioritize these matters," she added.

Vim Lady also expressed concern about the possibility of veteran broadcasters having to seek financial assistance on social media during their retirement.

"It would be distressing to see fellow journalists resorting to crowdfunding on social media, similar to what some veteran actors are doing. Even during elections, some journalists have been attacked without proper insurance coverage," she noted.
