The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has announced the successful dousing of the inferno that occurred at Zongo Lane in Makola, Accra.

The inferno was doused after seven days.

According to the GNFS, the blaze at the Zongo lane was particularly difficult to control due to the highly flammable materials involved, such as home appliances, plastics, and leather.

In an official statement the GNFS noted that its firefighters faced multiple obstacles, including locked shops, intense heat, thick acrid smoke, and collapsing structures.

Despite these challenges, they successfully confined the fire, preventing it from spreading to nearby areas.

The inferno destroyed eight shops, four warehouses, and twelve residential rooms; however, three adjoining buildings and warehouses were saved by the prompt and skilled response of the fire crews.

Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or fatalities.

The affected area has since been secured, and building experts are expected to assess the structural damage to determine further action.

Two fire engines remain on standby to address any potential reignition.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, and the GNFS has urged the public to prioritize fire safety to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The service also expressed gratitude to its firefighters and supporting agencies for their dedication and swift action throughout the operation.
