Kumasi, Oct 16, GNA - The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has commended the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) for effecting changes in the issuance of driving license.
It said the introduction and issue of the new computerised drivers' license was helping to prevent unqualified drivers from acquiring driving license.
Mr Sumaila Boakye, Ashanti Regional chairman of the Drivers Welfare Union of the GPRTU, said this at a monthly meeting of the union in Kumasi on Sunday.
The meeting is held every month to update and sharpen the skills of the drivers in defensive driving and passenger management.
Mr Boakye expressed concern about the removal of the inscription "professional driving license", which was boldly embossed at the back of the old license, from the new one and appealed to the authority to re-instate it to ensure the appreciation of professional value of the license.
He said any driver who earned a living out of driving would be more careful and serious, if the word "professional" was associated with him and appealed to the DVLA to bring back the inscription on the back of the new license to give a meaning to driving.
Mr Kwaku Nkrumah, Ashanti Regional Officer of the DVLA, said the issuance of the new license required the conduct of a series of tests before one could acquire it and appealed to prospective drivers not to resort to middlemen in the acquisition of driving licenses.
