A group of armed macho men have attacked and assaulted personnel of the Ghana Revenue Authority in Tamale.

The officers were severely manhandled at Sagnarigu around the Sports Stadium during a snap check exercise.

The Authority was conducting the exercise as part of measures to meet a revenue target of GH107.63m this year.

It had earlier held a tax education forum a week ago and warned a clampdown on tax avoiding motorists.

The officers were however attacked and their items vandalized when they attempted to arrest some culprits.

One officer suffered a serious eye injury and others had fractures on various parts of their bodies.

An official who refused to be named told Kasapa News the machomen came and started beating his fleeing colleagues.

He asked for military guard next time they intend to carry out similar exercise.

The attack has compelled the authority to suspend the operation and many officials have refused to report for work.

Speaking to Kasapa News, Mayor of Tamale Hanan Gundaadow boasted he halted the exercise because the revenue officials did not notify him.
