The 2017/2018 University of Ghana chapter of the Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG-UG) has inaugurated a fully refurbished and renovated library for the School of Medicine and Dentistry of the College of Health Sciences at the Korle-Bu campus.
There have been allegations that past student leaders have failed to extend the needed support to the various satellite campuses of the University of Ghana, but speaking at the event to commission the newly refurbished Korle-Bu Graduate Research Commons on Monday [June 4], the local President of GRASAG, Mr. Isaac Prah intimated, that the facility would go a long way to cushion graduate students in their academic work.
On his part, President of GRASAG-UG Mr. Ato Brown highlighted that, fulfilling the project is an expression of his commitment towards building an all-inclusive association while pursuing the interest of students. He however noted that the bottlenecks and bureaucratic barriers at the administration level of the university highly truncate the impact of the efforts of student leaders to serve the interest of their constituents.
“We appreciate the value of our colleagues on the Korle-Bu campus and the rest of all the other satellite campuses and thus the need to make their lives as comfortable too”, he maintained.
Also addressing issues of apparent marginalization of the satellite campuses by the central administration of student associations, Mr. Ato Brown highlighted that there are efforts which include restructuring of constitutions to fairly address the needs of students across the various campuses.
Secretary of the College of Health Sciences, Mr. Michael Opare Atuah commended the leadership of GRASAG-UG for their contributions to the University of Ghana’s vision of becoming a world class research intensive institution.
“The ambiance is different and now very conducive as a Research Common for graduate studies… we want to appreciate GRASAG for giving the facility a face-lift”, he said.
The project is one of the three, having been undertaken by the 2017/2018 GRASAG-UG. The refurbished Korle-bu Graduate Research Commons project was done in addition to the Wifi Extension at the Atomic Campus and the renovation of the reading rooms and TV rooms of the Valco hall on the Legon campus.
