Nyobok-Nkunzes (UE), March 6, GNA- The Ghana Rural Opportunity for Women (GROW), a local NGO working in the area of increasing the economic independence of women in Nyobok-Nkunzesi, near Sakoti in the Talensi-Nabdam District on Thursday presented various items to the Nyobok-Nkenzesi Naanore Women's Group in the area. The items are made up of 34 goats, two donkeys and their carts, 120 treated mosquito bed nets, 4 barrels, T. shirts and badges all worth 54 million cedis
Madam Philomena Yakong, Lecturer at the University for Development Studies (UDS), who read the speech on behalf of the founder of GROW, Ms Vida Yakong, said the main objectives of the NGO was to help reduce extreme poverty, mal-nutrition in Children, child labour, increase in the general health status of women and children, and to also sponsor children in school, especially that of the Girl -Child. She noted that the items presented especially the animals would help improved the economic status of the people. She said the Nyobok-Nkenzesi Women Group was formed by her late mother Madam Bugre Kawon Yakong in the 1980s, aimed at addressing pertinent challenges confronting women, especially the education of the Girl Child. Ms Vida Yakong said she was moved by her mother's initiatives of championing the cause of women to improve upon their economic and health status. Ms Olivia Fatchu, Project Coordinator of the Community Based Child Survival, under the Ghana Red Cross Society commended GROW for supporting the most deprived and the vulnerable in the society. She stated that the activities of the Red Cross Society involved the training of people in community on health issues including sanitation among others. Professor Fay Karp of the University of British Colombia Okanagn, Canada, expressed the optimism that the cooperation being created between GROW and the Okanagan University and other partners in Canada would help improve the living status of the women groups.
