GUBA Foundation builds autism awareness

......during Black History Month
With Black History Month in full swing throughout October, London charity the GUBA Foundation is continuing its campaign to build autism awareness in the black community.

The London charity is staging a seminar which takes place at The Vic Watson Conference Centre, Walworth Methodist Church, 54 Camberwell Road, SE5 0EN from 1pm on Saturday 12 October 2013.

Black History Month is observed annually in the UK to remember important people and events in the history of the African diaspora, as well as to address issues currently affecting the community.

This Black History Month, GUBA Foundation has gathered the best in autism care to provide some enlightenment on the condition to parents and carers. Speakers are as follows:

• Selve Krishnan - ceo of Communication Link Ltd. Selve is a specialist speech and language therapist who has over 10 years of experience treating pre-school, primary and secondary school aged children.

• Julia Avnon - an experienced psychologist with specialist training in neuro-developmental conditions, educational/cognitive assessments and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy approaches.

• Mandy Williams – ceo of autism charity Peach. She has extensive knowledge of the autism and applied behaviour analysis (ABA) sectors and will be discussing training and how Peach can assist families.

• Anya Ustaszewski – is an adult on the autistic spectrum, who works as a disability access officer and is an active member of a number of organisations campaigning for better rights and support for those with autism.

• Emelia Ouattara – is a social worker who has experience in the social aspects of autism. She will be discussing how parents and carers can access finance.

Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects communication, social interaction and how a person makes sense of the world around him or her. The condition affects one in every 100 people in the UK, which means that over 100,000 people living with the condition come from black or ethnic minority (BME) communities. People from the BME community are typically diagnosed later than the British indigenous population and tend to face more of an uphill struggle trying to seek support. "In light of these facts, the GUBA Foundation will provide a platform during the seminar for members of the BME community to access advice and support from experts in the autism field," said the charity's CEO and founder Dentaa. The event is a chance for parents and carers to share theri experiences and attempts to dispet the stigma often associated with the condition withi the BME community."

If you, your child or someone you know lives with autism, then this event is for you. Visit www.gubafoundationautism.eventbrite.com to book tickets.
