The Ghana Water Company Limited has hinted it is considering shutting down its water treatment plant at Abesim in the Brong Ahafo region.
This is because illegal miners are polluting the only source of water that serves the plant.
The development, according to water officials, could disrupt water supply to Sunyani and its environs.
The Brong Ahafo Water Quality Assurance manager Hanson Akuetteh Mensah told Starr News something needs to be done about the situation immediately.
“ The ‘galamseyers’ are still mining over the stretch and edge of the river. And this is seriously impacting negatively on the Tano river which we retreat at Abesim. The treatment system has been built to treat a certain quality of water, if it goes beyond that, we will be forced to shutdown the plant because it cannot treat the water again.
“ So I plead with the regional security council to flush out the galamsey operators as early as possible before things get out of hands,” he bemoaned.
