A misunderstanding between some individuals at Gbese in the Ga Mashie area of James Town in Accra has resulted in multiple injuries with the police arresting 13 suspects.
A middle aged woman is one of the individuals reported to have been shot in the early hours on Friday 8 June 2018 in the ensuing misunderstanding and was rushed to the hospital after profuse bleeding.
Information gathered by ClassFMonline.com sources suggest that the attackers are supporters of Nii Ayi Bonte II.
Nii Ayi Bonte II and Nii Okaidja III have been engaged in a protracted dispute over who is the legitimate chief of Gbese.
Videos circulating on social media show scores of some attackers wielding machetes, broken bottles and sticks engaging in a bloody fight with another youth group in the area.
At some point residents had to flee for their safety.
Director of Operations of the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, Chief Superintendent Kwesi Ofori, who spoke to Class FM’s Ibrahim Obeng-Mensah said preliminary reports suggest it was a “misunderstanding between the Gbese Mantse and his Wulomo (Chief Priest)”.
He said the police have been on the ground since the inception of the ban on noise making which precedes the annual Homowo festival of the Ga-Dangmes but “unfortunately some unknown gunmen came into the community and started firing and we learnt there are victims”.
He said the Regional Crime Officer has been tasked to visit the nearby hospitals to ascertain the facts.
“They are carrying out special tasks and targeted operations that led to the arrest of about 13 people in the community,” he added. He said the police have spoken to the leaders of the feuding factions to talk to their supporters for peace to prevail.
He encouraged people in the community to volunteer information to help deal with the latest incident and maintain peace in the area.
