Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent figure of the New Patriotic Party, has responded to remarks by Dr. Daniel McKorley, Executive Chairman of McDan Group, regarding how government policies have not helped the private sector.

Dr. McKorley while speaking at the Ghana CEO Presidential Gala Dinner on November 7, 2024, expressed concerns about the challenges faced by stakeholders in Ghana’s private sector.

According to him, the private sector has not benefited from government policies, which he thinks stifle local businesses and create an unfavorable environment.

"I will be very blunt, government policies have really not helped the private sector. That is where we are sitting right now, and we have to be frank about it," Dr. McKorley stated.

"If you want to do business in Ghana, you have to be prepared. Being a Ghanaian doing business in Ghana, you have to be brave," he stressed.

However, responding to Dr. McKorley’s claims, Gabby expressed shock that the business mogul, who, according to him, has largely benefited from the government’s full support in owning Africa’s largest salt concession, would blatantly make such a wild statement.

Gabby contended that the current government has created an environment where businesses can thrive, pointing out how previous administrations had failed to commercialise the salt project.

He further noted that the salt concession has the potential to generate $2 billion in salt production annually.

“I am perplexed! This is from an entrepreneur who enjoyed the full support of govt to own the largest salt concession in Africa, with the capacity to produce some $2bn of salt annually; a project that for 45yrs various govts failed to commercialise. Aghast!,” Gabby posted.
