Galamsey operator jailed for defilement, abortion

A 19-year-old resident of Twifo Kyerekum in the Central Region, has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for impregnating a 15-year-old class six pupil, and subsequently inducing her to abort the pregnancy.

Clement Abusah, a small-scale miner, was sentenced by a Cape Coast Circuit Court presided over by Ms. Audrey Kocuvie-Tay on Tuesday, after he had remorsefully pleaded guilty to the charges of defilement and abortion.

The facts of the case, as presented by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sylvanus Dalmeida, were that on Saturday, May 30, the father of the victim had information that Abusah has had sexual intercourse with his daughter resulting in a pregnancy.

The information also indicated that Abusah had induced her to take a concoction to terminate the one-month- old pregnancy and this infuriated the victim’s father who caused Abusah's arrest

ASP Dalmeida said a medical form was issued for the victim to go to hospital for examination.

The report confirmed that the pregnancy has been aborted, the prosecution added.

The court ignored his plea for forgiveness on the grounds that he was a threat to younger girls.
