Garden City University College Is Born And Here To Stay!!

The consistent urging of Ghanaians in the Diaspora by His Excellency President J. A. Kuffuor and the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to invest back home and put their vast knowledge acquired abroad at the disposal of the country’s developmental efforts has seeped deeply into the heart of Mr Albert Aqcuah, a U.S.A based Management Consultant in Virginia. The Ghanaian born consultant has invested several millions of dollars in Ghana ’s education sector with the setting up a University at Kenyanse, a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

In Mr. Acquah’s own words “Garden City University College is here today as a result of my desire to give back to my community and help meet the need for the increased demand for trained manpower in our dear country Ghana .” Mr. Acquah who is the Founder and Chancellor of the University said it is very gratifying to have a vision and with prayers and determination against all odds, see one’s vision and dream become a reality. Speaking at a colorful Matriculation Ceremony of the University at Kenyase, Mr Acquah observed that our newspapers are replete with headlines about lack of adequate facilities and declining enrollment in the public universities leading to loss of access to tertiary education. Garden City University College therefore seeks to afford Ghanaians the opportunity for quality tertiary education which is a crucial ingredient in our development process. "The mission of Garden City University College is to develop the next generation of innovators who will become agents of change in our society and this endeavor means our curriculum is designed with emphasis on technology, entrepreneurship and innovation focused like a laser beam until our students accomplish their goals and dreams” the affable Chancellor noted.

Another important feature of the University is the provision of scholarships to students to assist and stimulate them to develop to their full potential. Garden City places a high premium on authentic academic freedom and encourages both faculty and students to pursue innovative research that will lead to the development of new ideas, methodologies and products that will benefit our society, noted Mr Aqcuah. To ensure that the University has direct impact on our Community, Mr. Acquah said the College is setting up a Center for Research and Community Outreach that will focus on Micro-finance, Entrepreneurship development, Technology development, and promotion of Health Education. He expressed optimism about the impact the University will have on the economic fabric of Ghana .

The College has established strategic alliance and partnerships with some Universities in the U.S.A including the University of District of Columbia to exchange students, faculty, technical and research specialists for short and long term visits to promote internship and practical training for the students and the staff of the College. These exchange programs are designed to deepen instructional quality and improve the competitive edge of our students in the global market place, he said.

The Principal of the College, Dr. Lord Asamoah, on his part said that "Education at the College aims at developing the total being of the student – intellectual, physical, and spiritual – by providing them with the highest standard of intellectual, moral and social experience. He advised the students that “it is necessary for a common standard of proper conduct be adhered to, so that your rights as students do not infringe on the rights of your neighbors; consequently a junior member is expected to exhibit discipline and courtesy and also to refrain from actions that are likely to cause embarrassment to the College” He however assured parents and guardians of the students that under no circumstance will discipline be used as an instrument of intimidation or harassment, rather the interests and welfare of the students will always come first in everything the University does. Present to grace the Matriculation Ceremony were the Akyempimhene, Nana Adusei-Poku who represented the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei-Tutu II, Nana Amankwatia, Kumasi Bantamahene, Dr Bobby Austin, the Vice President of the University of District Of Columbia, U.S.A , Hon Osei-Assibey, the Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, representing the Ashanti Coordinating Council, Barimah Owusu –Agyeman, Kenyasehen and a Governor from Bukina Fasso.
