The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has stated that Mrs. Charlotte Osei’s appointment has come at a very historic point in the history of Ghana’s women empowerment process.
According to the ministry, 40 years ago, Ghana’s women machinery was set up to ensure the full integration of women in the society to enhance national development, adding that, her appointment to a position that had been occupied for 22 years by a man, known and respected in both Ghana and abroad for steering Ghana’s electoral process peacefully proves the fact that the integration of women into Ghana’s development process is on course.
This was contained in a press statement signed by the Communications Advisor, Mr Abraham Asare and copied to the media on Thursday July 2, 2015.
The statement explained that “Mrs. Osei adds to the long list of women who have proven in Ghana, that given the opportunity, a woman can equally do well. The list includes the Chief Justice, Justice Mrs. Georgina Theodora Wood, and the Government Statistician, Dr. Philomena Nyarko, former Speaker of Parliament, Her Ladyship Justice Bamford Addo, two Commissioners of CHRAJ and many others”.
“Mrs. Osei is not new to public office. As the immediate past head of the National Commission for Civic Education, and with her envious academic laurels, the Ministry believes she is well positioned for the post of Chairman of the Electoral Commission of Ghana”, it said.
The Ministry wishes Mrs. Osei well and prays that she would get the necessary support from all shades of the political divide to succeed.
