Accra, March 12, GNA - About 400 workers of the General Metal Manufacturing Workers Union (GEMM) have opted to join the Ghana Mines Workers Union (GMWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), believing that under the latter their economic conditions would improve.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Friday, a spokesman for the workers who preferred to remain anonymous, alleged that they broke away from the General Metal Manufacturing Workers Union because its performance was far below their expectation.
He said they found that there was a sharp contrast between they and members of GMWU as far as living conditions are concerned and that was largely due to the able performance of the leadership of the GMWU. The spokesman said they had written to the appropriate authorities to stop deductions of their contributions to GEMM and that those deductions should rather be sent to the GMWU.
