Ghacem, the nation’s leading cement manufacturer, has donated 1,000 bags of cement to Tema General Hospital as part of activities marking its 50th anniversary celebration and also promised to develop the hospital’s infrastructure.

Speaking at a brief ceremony to present the cement donation to the hospital, Managing Director of Ghacem, Mr. Morten Gade said the donation is to assist in completing the surgical theatre of the hospital.

“1,000 bags of cement will go a long way in assisting to complete the theatre. We have budgets, but we will not forget Tema General Hospital; we will try our best to keep supporting the hospital,” Mr. Gade added.

The Managing Director noted that the company will continue to support the infrastructural development of the hospital, adding that “we will do our best to support the hospital to enable you deliver the best in health service to the people of Tema; by helping with the infrastructure you need.”

He explained that the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility is built mainly on two pillars: health and education; because “we need to make sure that we are helping to keep the population in good health, and educating the Ghanaian people so we can progress for the betterment of Mother Ghana.”

According to him, Ghacem has so far donated more than 500,000 bags of cement since the company started the Ghacem Cement Foundation in 2002.

He said “this goes to not only Tema and Takoradi, it also goes to all ten regions of this country and we are particularly prioritizing the needs of the most impoverished areas: Upper East, Upper West, Northern regions of Ghana because we know that needs in these areas are very high.”

Works Manager of Ghacem in Tema, Eugene Laryea, encouraged the staff and management of the hospital to continue working to improve the health of the people.

Mr. Laryea said the hospital deserves more support from corporate Ghana because of the good work of the staff, adding that “we want to encourage you to keep up the good work. This donation, we hope, will make a difference in lives.”

Receiving the donation on behalf of the hospital, Medical Director of Tema General Hospital, Dr. Kwabena Adusei Poku said the hospital serves over 900,000 people both within and outside the Tema Metropolis and thus deserves more support from corporate organisations.

Dr. Adusei Poku stated that it is duty bound on all corporate organisations, especially those within the Tema Metropolis “to make sure that the hospital is up to a certain standard” since it is the first referral centre in case of anything.

“I want the hospital to get to a stage where when I’m sick today, they’ll tell me they’re taking me to the theatre at Tema General Hospital and I will be confident of coming out safely,” he said.

Tema Mantse, Nii Adjei Kraku II also thanked Ghacem for the donation and called on other corporate organisations within Tema to emulate the steps of Ghacem and support the hospital.
