Outsourced workers at the Ghana Bauxite Company at Awaso in the Western Region have hit hard at management of the company over what they say is unfair salary conditions they have been subjected to.

Burning of the company’s administration office is one way for them to register their intolerance and anger over a pittance end of month income of GHC300.

Demanding a 10% increment, the strikers took over the company Monday morning and in their anger, destroyed some properties belonging to the company.

Confirming the situation to Ghanaweb, Bibiani District Commander, Suprintendent Christopher Mpiani disclosed that the employees burnt two company vehicles – a Nissan Hardbody Pick Up and a Land Cruiser. He added that there were burnt tyres and blockages leading to the premises of the Bauxite Company.

According to him, his men were able to restore calm through talks with the workers.

Although there were no reports of injury, Supr. Mpiani said “five persons have been arrested” adding that the police are getting “management to speak to their workers in order to settle them as soon as possible.’

The offices of the Bauxite Company remain closed but efforts to reach management and workers have since proven futile.
