Ghana, Burkina Faso agree to implement railway project

Ghana and Burkina Faso have signed an agreement to implement a Railway Inter-connectivity Project.

They have as well signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to foster greater collaboration in matters of security in their respective countries. MOUs on cooperation in Sports, Leisure and Education were also signed.

The agreements were signed at the end of the three-day 12th Session of the Ghana-Burkina Faso Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC) held in Accra from the 12th to 14th of December, 2018.

The Government of the Republic of Ghana and the Government of Burkina Faso, within the framework of enhanced cooperation and at the instance of their Excellencies, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the Republic of Ghana and President Roch Marc Christian Kabore of Burkina Faso, organized the Twelfth (12th) Session of the Ghana-Burkina Faso Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC).

The Session considered cooperation within the broad areas of: Political, Security, Legal, Economic, Trade, Investment, Energy, Infrastructure, Agriculture, Water Resources and Environment.

Memoranda of Understanding and Agreements for Cooperation in the above-stated sectors as well as in the area of human and social development were considered.

In all, 43 senior officials from Burkina Faso and 47 from the Republic of Ghana, attended the joint meeting.

Dr. Anthony Akoto Osei, Minister of Monitoring and Evaluation in a statement on behalf of the Republic of Ghana, indicated that Ghana- Burkina Faso relations has been greatly enhanced and evidence of real work would be seen on the ground soon.

Burkina Faso Foreign Minister

His Excellency Mr. Alpha Barry, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Burkina Faso, who led his country’s ministerial delegation, in an address said his country is looking forward to a strong bond of friendship and cooperation with Ghana that would be mutually beneficial to the peoples of Ghana and Burkina Faso.

Uncompleted MoUs

The draft Agreements for Cooperation and Memoranda of Understanding, which required further consultation before finalization, were deferred to a future convenient date.

Representatives of the two countries assured that they remained committed to concluding the consideration of the remaining agreements and MoUs. The two countries reaffirmed the commitment of their respective governments to enhance the long-standing and friendly relations that exist between the Republic of Ghana and Burkina Faso.
