The Ghana Police service as part of its transformational agenda to help combat crime in the country has launched a motorbike patrol team to deal with criminals.

At the official launch of the event which took place at the National Police Training School at Tesano on April 10, the Inspector General of Police, David Asante Apeatu said the setup of the 59-man squad is part of the police's mission of using different strategies to combat crime in our neighbourhood.

"The advent of the usage of motorbikes in perpetuating violent crime in the country pushed the police Administration to create the special unit. These men have been trained to respond adequately and bring to book miscreants who think they are smarter when using the motorbike to rob. The new squad supported by other operational team are poised and will not be kind to you when you are caught in the act," he said.

The motorbike patrol team which consists of 59 police personnel from various police units across the country undertook two weeks intensive training for the task ahead of them to fight crime.

There appears to be a heightened wave of robbery attacks in the country where lots of individuals and some big companies such as Forex Bureaux have been at the mercy of these criminals in broad daylight.

It will be recalled that a few weeks ago, a Lebanese was killed in a robbery attack at Tema. Hence the police is doing all it can to deal with this menace with the establishment of the motorbike patrols to make sure citizens and institutions are safe in the country.

The motorbike patrol team were taken through series of training in defensive riding and high-risk operation to be able to combat crime effectively.

The aim of the course is to build a robust capability to counter the menace of using motorbikes for robberies. The motorbike patrol team will continue to undergo re-training as time goes on to always keep them at their professional best.

The team will be deployed to areas such as Kwabenya, Adenta, Dansoman, Sakaman, North Kaneshie and places where lots of criminal activities take place.

Inspector General of police David Asante-Apeatu who officially launched the Patrol team gave a word of caution to criminals who have in the past week engaged in shootouts with the police at various crime scenes to be careful since the police won’t spare them should they be found.

‘’Let me sound a word of warning to the criminal element in our society, especially those who are in the habit of using motorbikes to commit crime.

"The few of you cannot take hostage. The new squad supported by other operational team are poised and will not be kind to you when you are caught in the act."
