Ho, Oct 9, GNA - The Volta Regional Directorate of the Ghana Postal Service is to liase with district assemblies to revamp 120 dormant Postal Agencies in the region.
Mr Sylvester Ansrodjah, Acting Regional Head of Ghana Post, said this on Thursday at a durbar at Ho to mark this years "World Post Day." He said 33 post offices are operational in the region leaving many areas from getting access to postal and other services of the company. Mr Ansrodjah said town development committees could manage the revamped postal agencies and create job opportunities for the youth.
He said contract for the rehabilitation of the Hohoe Post Office building has been awarded and work would soon begin.
He said as part of measures to keep the company in business after separating from Ghana Telecom, a Domestic Money Transfer Service would be introduced and clients could send and receive moneys within Ghana using code names.
Mr Samuel Kwame Kukah, the Administrative Manager, said the situation in Japan and other developed countries have shown that despite the availability of instant communication channels such as the internet, postal services would remain a prime channel of communication. He defended the recent hike in postal charges saying the increase was necessary due to rising operational costs.
