Ghana Statistical Service to release census results on Thursday May 31

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) on Tuesday said it would work hard with the support of the final district boundary disputes report to release the district level census data by Thursday, May 31.

Mr. Kofi Agyeman-Duah, Acting Government Statistician in Charge-of-Operations, said “Now that the district boundary disputes have been resolved, the GSS would come out with the final results of the 2010 Population and Housing Census including the district results”.

He announced this when the Committee on Inter-District Dispute set to research the district boundary disputes associated with the 2010 National Population and Housing census presented its final report to the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development in Accra.

The committee, appointed by government was tasked to resolve inter-district boundary disputes and make recommendations to government to enable the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) release the district level census data.

Mr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, said GSS released provisional results of the census at the national and regional level, but was unable to release the district level data due to district boundary disputes encountered prior to and during the 2010 enumeration exercise.

He said in the events leading to and during the exercise, the GSS, with the support of enumerators, their supervisors and sometimes, district census officials as well as community leaders, had to convince households in these communities before they got registered.

“This was done with the understanding that information collected would be sent to the appropriate districts”.

Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo noted that the report would enable the GSS release the 2010 Housing and Population Census at the district level and serve as an excellent reference material for anyone interested in administrative and political boundaries supervised by local government bodies in Ghana.

He commended the committee for a job well done and for bringing their rich experience, knowledge, expertise and time to bear on the assignment.

Professor Raymond Bagulo Bemeng, Chairman of the committee, said it worked tirelessly to present the report which included the core results submitted in the interim, which would help the GSS release the final results at the district level.**
