Ghana celebrates 48th Republic Day

Tarkwa (W/R), July 1, GNA - Ghanaians on Tuesday celebrate the 48th Anniversary of the nation's attainment of Republican status and the citizens across the length and breadth of the country are marking the historic event with various activities.

People from all walks of life at Tarkwa, early in the morning embarked on a five- kilometre health walk, starting from Akyempim, a suburb of Tarkwa, through Tamso, Efuanta, the heart of Tarkwa and ended at the Tarkwa Community Centre.

In an address, Mr George Mireku Duker, Tarkwa- Nsuaem Municipal Chief Executvie, said the health walk amply demonstrated the unity that existed among the people and that should be sustained. He advised the people not to allow political affiliations to divide their ranks, adding, that those who participated were made up of supporters of different parties and that was the beauty of democracy and which must be upheld.

Mr Duker said, in addition to organizing other health walks, every 1st July would be marked with a health walk. Dr Jack Galley, Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal Director of Health Services said exercising was a natural therapy which maked the body system reactivated to perform effectively. He said the walk was not for health alone, but has brought people together for peace and development.
