Accra, Oct. 24, GNA - Ghana has congratulated the United Nations (UN) for its immense contribution towards peace-building and conflict resolution on the occasion of its 63rd Day celebration. "We salute the UN for its role in the fight against hunger and poverty amidst the growing effects of climate change and its subsequent impact on our environment," a statement issued in Accra and signed by Dr Kojo Assan, Director of International Organisation and Multilateral Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Friday. The statement said for the world to have a sustainable peace and security, fight hunger and poverty, while preserving the environment for the present and future generation major stakeholders had a crucial role to play as well as rallying their support behind the organisation. It also expressed confidence that with the dedication and support of the nations, the UN could successfully, make the world a better place as well as support developing countries to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The statement pledged Ghana's continued support towards the promotion of global peace initiatives as well as the realization of the UN Charter's obligation of fostering world peace, respect for human rights and good governance.
The UN established on October 24, 1945 initially had 50 countries to act as a universal platform to promote friendly relations among individual sovereign states, enhance international co-operation and multilateral relations among states.
It was also to serve as a centre for harmonising the common principles and guidelines necessary to achieve these goals. The organisation now has 129 countries with additional responsibilities to help mitigate issues relating to poverty, global warming, nuclear proliferation, climate change, terrorism, human right, renewable energy, communication and economic development.
