Ghana donates to US hurricane victims

Accra, Sept. 13, GNA - Ghana has donated 100,000 dollars worth of cocoa drinks and chocolates to victims of the devastating Hurricane Katrina in the US.

"By this modest donation, Ghana registers her solidarity with the people of the United States of America as they struggle to deal with the tragedy," a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in Accra on Tuesday.

The statement said the donation was a follow-up to a message of sympathy issued by President John Agyekum Kufuor to US President George Bush.

President Kufuor's message read: "I have been following with profound sympathy the unfolding widespread havoc being visited on the Gulf Coast and its contiguous states of Louisiana, Mississippi and the surrounding areas by Hurricane Katrina.

"I have also noted with deep shock the devastation of catastrophic proportions which has affected lives, property and infrastructure in the stricken areas.

"On behalf of the Government and people of the Republic of Ghana and in my own name, I wish to express deep commiserations and condolences to you, and through you to the bereaved population." A devastating hurricane has wrecked havoc in some states in the US leaving towns and cities under floodwaters.
