Ghana's Vice-President, Professor John Atta Mills today said Ghana has learnt with deep shock the sudden death of General Sani Abacha. A statement issued in Accra this evening by Professor Mills expressed sympathy to the people of Nigeria and Mrs. Abacha in particular.
It said General Abacha will be remembered for his contribution to conditions of peace and stability in the West African sub-region. Under his leadership, Nigeria played a major role in ensuring the restoration of peace in Liberia and the re-instatement of constitutional legitimacy to Sierra Leone, and said it is to Abacha's credit that ECOWAS, whose chairmanship he occupied up to the time of his death, remains vibrant and holds out prospects for more meaningful regional economic integration.
The statement said Nigeria has lost a leader and hoped that at this time of Abacha's death it will bring unity and stability to Nigeria.
