Ghana may soon import water if – Martey

The Ghana Water Company Limited has warned that negative environmental practices and pollution of water sources could lead to the importation of potable water.

There is water shortage in parts of the Greater Accra, Western and Eastern regions. Head of Communications at Ghana Water Company Stanley Martey has warned the situation may get worse.

“We are hoping that by the end of 2016, we should be able to improve coverage by some 10 per cent or so…. So, we are hoping we will be able to hit some 90 per cent coverage. There is that serious fear and I have to be sincere and very frank with the people of Ghana that if we continue the way we are doing things, if we are not careful, we may have to be importing water,” he said in an interview with Class News.

To address the water shortage, especially at Nsawam in the Eastern region, the Ghana Water Company has begun dredging the Densu river following the drying up of the Ghana Water Company’s treatment plant reservoir.

The dredging is one of three interventions already underway to deal with the shortage, which has forced people to drink from ponds and other polluted sources.

Mr Martey has told residents to expect some relief as they begin tanker services as a short-term measure.
