Today, 6th March 2019 marks 62 years since Ghana gained independence from their colonial masters.

The Independence fight championed by the first president of the country, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah made Ghana, then Gold Coast the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to gain independence.

Since independence in 1957, the country each year celebrates its liberation at the capital city, Accra.

But the Akufo-Addo-led government this year decided to change the location of the independence celebration to the capital city of the Northern Region, Tamale.

Explaining the rationale behind the move, Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah noted that moving the 62nd Independence celebration to the Northern Region is a way of deepening the peace and harmony that has returned to the region after several years since the death of the Ya Na.

Below are pictures of the 62nd Independence Day celebration at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale.
