Ghana's population has crossed the 33 million mark and is expected to reach 52.47 million by 2050, according to the latest projections by the Ghana Statistical Service.

At the end of the 2021 population and housing census, Ghana's population was 30.8 million. However, the statistical service said that between 2021 and 2030, 711,706 people will be added to the population each year, pushing the population to 37.24 million by 2030.

Additionally, the country's urban population is projected to continue its growth, reaching 60.7% by 2030, up from the 56.7% urban population of 2021.

The service said this will deepen the population pressure in Greater Accra by 2030.

By 2050, Ghana is also expected to see its population above 60 years rise to 10.8% from the current 6.5%.

Meanwhile, government statistician Professor Samuel Kobina Annim says the latest projections emphasize the need for renewed conversations around the age of retirement.
