Ghana's security not under threat – Aning

Ghana’s security is not under threat despite the recent spate of killings and violent clashes, security analyst Dr Kwesi Aning has said.

Violent clashes in Old Tafo in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday February 10, led to the vandalisation of cars, mosques, churches and stalls. Several people sustained injuries with some deaths rumoured although the Police have not yet confirmed any. The clashes were between a predominantly Muslim community and some locals in the area over a cemetery.

On the same day the Tafo clashes happened, two brothers were tragically killed at Mampong in the same Region by Police Officers in a case of mistaken identity.

The two violent events came a day after the murder of Abuakwa North MP J B Danquah Adu on Tuesday February 9 at his Shiashie residence in Accra. Prior to all these events, there have been several arms hauls by customs and police officers in the Volta and Northern Regions.

Also, during the governing National Democratic Congress’ parliamentary primaries in November last year, tempers flared up in Ningo-Prampram which led to scuffles and skirmishes.

Also, there were violent clashes between rival forces within Ghana’s biggest opposition party – NPP – both at its headquarters in Accra and at its office in the Asawase constituency in the Ashanti Region, over the indefinite suspension of the party’s national chairman Paul Afoko. A party activist died in the Asawase skirmishes. Prior to that the party’s Upper East Regional Chairman, Adam Mahama, was killed by rivals within the same party over the same Afoko saga.

Despite the catalogue of violence recorded since last year into this year, Dr Aning told Ekow Mensah-Shalders on Class91.3fm’s Executive Breakfast Show on Thursday February 11, 2016 that though the string of events call for worry, Ghana could not be said to be under threat from such happenings. “I don’t think in generality, our security is under threat. They are disturbing developments that we need to be watchful about …we should learn from some of the failures, but as a whole, I wouldn’t say the nation is under threat, no , very far from it,” Dr Aning said.
