The British High Commissioner, Harriet Thompson, has lauded Ghana for its recent strides in gender equality, particularly the passage of the Gender Equity law.
She pointed out the strong bond between Ghana and the United Kingdom, noting their shared democratic values and the steps Ghana has taken to empower women.
According to a report by myjoyonline.com, she made these remarks while addressing attendees at the King’s Birthday celebration in Accra on November 7, 2024.
“Ghana took a historic step by enacting the affirmative action and gender equality act into law, setting a goal of 40% of public offices held by women.
“There’s no reason why this figure can’t be 50% or higher in the future,” she added.
Harriet Thompson also extended her support to female political candidates in the upcoming elections.
“In so many countries, it is still hard to be a female candidate, and we, whether men or women, need to use our influence to change that,” she stated.
She reiterated the economic and educational ties that bind the two countries, mentioning the UK’s support for youth development and sustainable development in the country.
“A strong Ghanaian economy creates opportunities for increased UK-Ghana trade, allowing both of our countries to grow.
“We know that a strong and enduring bilateral partnership that both learns from the past and looks to the future could improve the lives of people in both of our countries,” she concluded, raising a glass in honour of King Charles III and toasting to the future of the Ghana-UK partnership,” she explained.
