Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has reiterated Ghana's stance against LGBT+ activities.

He emphasized that the nation's cultural and religious values do not support such practices.

His remarks came during a campaign tour in Dambai, where he addressed a gathering of local chiefs and community members.

"Nananom, I want to comment on the issue of LGBTQ. For that practice, Ghana will never agree.

“Our culture doesn’t accept it, our religion doesn’t accept it. No matter what the consequences are, we are going to stand firm on our beliefs. We will never agree to such a thing. It is no, no, no!" he said.

Meanwhile, the Parliament of Ghana on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, passed the Promotion of Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, widely known as the anti-LGBT+ bill.

The bill, currently awaiting presidential assent, proscribes Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) activities and criminalises their promotion, advocacy, and funding.

Persons caught in these acts will be subjected to a six-month to three-year jail term, with promoters and sponsors facing a three to five-year jail term.

The bill will now require presidential assent to come into force within seven days.

However, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has refused to assent to the bill, citing legal issues.
