Lack of potable water in Adawso, a farming community in the Akuapem-North Municipal District of the Eastern Region, has forced residents to rely on the Volta Lake for their survival, creating a thriving business for water distributors.

Sheperd, a water distributor in the community, told GhanaWeb TV that the lake has been their source of water for many years.

"We depend on this water for our livelihood. We use it to cook, bathe, and wash. This has been the situation for many years because this community lacks potable water. I fetch the water in receptacles and distribute the water to residents in Adawso and nearby communities, including Dodowa.

"When we fill the big receptacle, we sell it at 10 cedis in Adawso. If we transport it to nearby communities, we sell it for 30 cedis. They pay for the transportation of the water to the communities. We make 200-300 cedis daily depending on the size of the water receptacles,"  he narrated.

He said the business is booming with nearly 100 distributors, operating without any major challenges.  “We are many. We are close to 100. So far, we have not encountered any major challenges in this line of  business," he stated.

Another water distributor, Selorm, who has been in the business for ten years, confirmed that the prices of transporting water to residents in nearby communities are the same.

"The water is clean. Some people do not treat it. They drink it just like that. We are ok with this water. We are managing it like that. But if we get pipe-borne water, we would be proud of it. Until then, this is what we are depending on," he stated.
