The 2,000-strong U.N. force, which include Ghanaian soldiers, deployed in southern Lebanon near the Israeli border said Monday that Israel's onslaught was endangering its soldiers, one of whom was already been seriously wounded.
The U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), in a statement, said two of its positions were hit by direct rounds from the Israelis on Sunday and that 15 other posts had near misses.
There are yet no plans to move out the 500-odd Ghanaian troops as the UN would have to take this decision. Led by a French general, UNIFIL, which has suffered 249 killed since 1978, currently has troop contingents from Ghana, China, France, India, Ireland, Italy and Poland, but is largely powerless militarily. Its mandate, renewed every six months, next expires on July 31. Meanwhile, dozens of countries - United States of America, the United Kingdom, Italy, Philippine, Canada, etc. - are evacuating their nationals from Lebanon to escape Israeli air strikes which have pounded the country for six days. There are still no public statements from the government of Ghana on evacuation of Ghanaian citizens. It is estimated that there are over 10,000 – both legal and illegal -Ghanaians living in Lebanon Nigeria is assisting Ghana and other African nations, such as Senegal and Ethiopia, with no diplomatic presence in Lebanon to evacuate. So far, over 100 Nigerians have been moved to a town near the border with Syria while arrangements have been made to take them to a safer ground in Damascus and Syria from where those who wish to will be flown home.. Fresh hostilities broke out between Israel and Lebanon last week when two Israeli soldiers were kidnapped by Hezbollah militants based in Lebanon. The militants had demanded the release of Palestinian and Lebanese prisoners in Israel in exchange for the soldiers, a demand Israel rebuffed.
