Toronto police are looking for persons who gunned down a 31-year-old Ghanaian resident in Toronto in a drive-by shooting in North York on Sunday.
Jenas Nyarko was returning home from a funeral in a vehicle with three friends near Allen Road and Lawrence Avenue West when a Cadillac SUV pulled up beside them and opened fire.
The vehicle carrying the gunman fled the scene after Jenas Nyarko who was in the back seat of the other vehicle was struck by the gunfire.
She was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced dead.
According to police although the gunman discharged his firearms several more times in Flemingdon Road and Blossomfield Drive, no one was struck.
Det. David Dickinson told reporters there is no information to suggest either Nyarko or any of her friends was the target of the shooting.
According to him, “At this early stage in this investigation, it would appear that this is a case of individuals coming from one neighbourhood in the city to another neighbourhood and shooting the first residents that they see”.
He called on anyone with information of the suspect vehicle and the gunman to reach out to the police.
Meanwhile, the police have released video surveillance footage of the vehicle, which has been described as a silver or grey 2010 to 2016 Cadillac SRX SUV with a sunroof.
Emergency personnel are pictured on the scene after the fatal shooting of Jenas Nyarko
They, however, could not confirm how many people were inside the SUV at the time of the shooting.
Jenas Nyarko moved to Canada from Ghana in 2001, lived alone and worked at a shelter.
