Accra, July 20, GNA - The Ghana Armed Forces on Wednesday, gave the assurance that all Ghanaian troops serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) were safe.
A statement signed Colonel E W K Nibo, Director of Public Relations, said "the Forces Command is in constant touch with the contingent and it is updated on developments within the UN area of responsibility in particular and in the Lebanon in general." The statement explained that following the outbreak of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, the Ghana Armed Forces had been monitoring the developing military situation and assured the nation of the safety of Ghanaian troops.
"The Military High Command has sent and continues to send messages of encouragement, solidarity and support to the troops and has urged them to be steadfast and vigilant in the performance of their duties and responsibilities."
The statement noted; "The troops are operating under the United Nations mandate, as such the UN is responsible for their evacuation should the need arise and therefore there is no cause for alarm. "The plans, methods and mode of evacuation are always available as contingency plans and these would be initiated only when there is a requirement to do so," it stated.
