....the Community on Mental Health Awareness
Mental health is considered a taboo to be discussed among ‘healthy’ communities, especially, in the Ghanaian community! In our community, there is stigma attached to those who suffer or have suffered mental health problems. The unfortunate truth is that most of us, if not all, in one way or the other suffer mental health problem. This could result from work place/family stress, immigration, economic, cultural as well as religious challenges!
It is in the light of the above that the ‘Ghanaian Speak’ Forum based in Toronto, will be organizing two events on Mental Health Awareness to educate Ghanaians in Toronto on the determinants of mental health and how the absence of those factors constitute stress, which can impact one’s mental health.
Participants of these events would be given resources in the community which they can navigate for support. The first event is at the Trinity Baptist Church (800 Arrow Road) on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at 3:30pm prompt. The Ga-Adangbe Cultural group would host the second event on Sunday, May 26, 2013 at their meeting place near Finch Ave West/Barthurst.
The events are sponsored by Across Boundaries which is an NGO with Mental Health & Justice Initiative Program.
