Abuakwa (Ash), Sept. 17, GNA - Mr. Opoku Afriyie, a member of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), on Tuesday advised Ghanaians to desist from igniting conflicts with the hope of being protected by the police.
He explained that even though the security agencies were mandated to maintain law and order, they could not control all conflicts before they got out of hand.
Mr. Afriyie, who is also a lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), gave the advice at a forum, organized by the NCCE to sensitise the people on their rights and responsibilities before, during and after the 2008 Election, at Abuakwa in the Atwima Nwabiagya District of Ashanti.
It was attended by members of political parties, chiefs, security agencies and other stakeholders.
Mr. Afriyie urged the youth to examine campaign messages of political parties carefully before voting on December 7.
Party supporters cautioned independent parliamentary candidates to refrain from using colours or paraphernalia of political parties they have deserted to camping for votes, to avoid confusion and violence. Superintendent Maxwell Osei, Abuakwa District Police Commander, said it was wrong for political parties to paste posters on buildings without the consent of the owners. He reminded the public that it was unlawful for any person to remove party posters without informing the political party concerned or the police. Superintendent Osei assured Ghanaians that the police would ensure free, fair and peaceful elections in December. Nana Akosa Brimpong II, Abuakwahene, appealed to Ghanaians to avoid insults, acrimony and violence before, during and after the elections.
