Ghanaians advised to exercise regularly

Accra, Nov. 26, GNA - Ghanaians have been urged to engage in regular physical exercise so that they would remain healthy at all times.

Miss Theresa Amerley Tagoe, Deputy Minister for Lands, Forestry and Mines, made the call at the end of this year's "Great Walk", organised by the Dansoman Keep-fit Club in collaboration with the Lions Club was held in Accra on Saturday.

About 2,000 members of keep-fit clubs drawn from the Greater Accra, Eastern and Volta regions took part in the two-hour non-competitive walk, which was started from the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra and ended at the Dansoman Keep Fit Club Grounds.

Miss Tagoe said people who engaged regularly in physical exercises had sound minds apart from staying healthy to contribute towards the development of the country.

The Deputy Minister, who is also Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South charged the participants to have some hours of exercise everyday in order to avoid preventable diseases and thereby cut down on their medical bills.

She appealed to the Dansoman Keep Fit Club to make the event a competitive one so that more clubs would participate. Mr Joseph N.O. Ankrah, Chairman of the Dansoman Keep Fit Club said the club organised the event to strengthen the already existing cordial relationship between keep-fit clubs.

Dr Kwamena Beecham, President of the Ghana Diabetes Association advised the participants to reduce their oil and fat intake so that they would not contract diabetes, which was fast eating into the society. He suggested that one Saturday in the year be set up as a National Walking Day.
