Ghanaians must learn to be tolerant before preaching peace – NMC

Executive Secretary of the National Media Commission, George Sarpong Executive Secretary of the National Media Commission, George Sarpong

The Executive Secretary of the National Media Commission, George Sarpong is urging Ghanaians to learn to be tolerant of each other before thinking of dealing with a polarized society.

According to him, Ghanaians should not only wait for election periods to begin calling for peace.

He was speaking at a stakeholder engagement to deal with disinformation in Accra.

George Sarpong further stated that Ghanaians cannot spend years marinating in the polarizing narrative of our grievances and intolerance and just turn up calling for peace in an election year.

“When we as Christians feel entitled to pursue our Christian agenda against others and we feel it is right, that is how we must understand when political parties feel entitled to go at their opponents. All of us must begin to learn how we can accommodate each other even when we don’t agree with them. That is the foundation for anything we can do together to end polarized narratives in our society.

“As part of that, I call on all of us to develop the civic feel, the behavioural norms and moral values in the way we communicate to each other. That is the only way we can work together to create a functioning democracy.”
