Ghana is blessed with fertile land, therefore, Ghanaians should not suffer from hunger as a result of lack of food, John Agyekum Kufuor, former President of Ghana has said.

According to him, the current state where most Ghanaians are unable to afford a daily square meal, is worrying due to the potential in the agriculture sector of Ghana.

Mr Kufuor noted that agriculture has been abandoned by the youth who rather choose to go seeking nonexistent white colour jobs in cities.

He called on the youth to divert their attention to the agriculture sector because it is a noble profession if done properly.

“Ghana is blessed with fertile land and natural resources. In most parts of the country, whatever crop you grow, you will benefit from it. But there are some problems facing the sector,” he said in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson on Ghana Yensom on Accra 100.5FM on Wednesday, 30 May in connection with a report dubbed: “Ghana Zero Hunger Strategic Review Report” compiled by the John Agyekum Kufuor Foundation.

He added: “Marketing of food in Ghana is a major challenge, and, so, a lot of the food is going waste.”

“We cannot store food if we are unable to expand our agriculture. In order to expand agriculture, the farmers will need to adopt modern methods of farming – fertiliser application, irrigation farming, value addition and others.”
