Kunsu (Ash), Dec 29, GNA- Mr Peter Owoahene Akyeampong, this year's Ahafo Ano South District best farmer, has stressed the need for institutions which disburse loans to farmers to do so at the appropriate time to enable them to utilize it profitably.
He said the situation whereby farmers were granted loans almost towards the end of the farming season was a complete disincentive to farmers.
Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Kunsu, Mr Akyeampong said if a farmer is given a loan towards the end of the farming season the possibility is that he will not spend the money on the farm.
He said farming is lucrative but needs capital at the initial stage otherwise it becomes subsistence and could create hardship and disincentive to the youth.
Mr Akyeampong cautioned farmers against competition and said it undermined progress and commended the extension officers in the district for their assistance to farmers.
