Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has recommended the courts to Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, the Member of Parliament for Effutu, as the appropriate avenue for resolving disputes over election results.
Addressing a press conference on Friday, December 13, 2024, Asiedu Nketiah argued that Afenyo-Markin committed a legal blunder by seeking a re-collation and re-declaration of results from some disputed constituencies in the Greater Accra, Eastern, and Bono East Regions.
Asiedu Nketiah posited that the ideal platform for seeking redress is the courts and that Afenyo-Markin should take his case there.
Commenting on the ongoing re-collation of results at the Tesano Police Station, Asiedu Nketiah stated that the process is flawed and has no basis in law.
“When there is a declaration, nobody can do another declaration. If you have an issue, you resort to court. If Afenyo-Markin is listening, he should go to court. All these charges about declaration under duress will be part of the evidence that will be led in court, and the elements of duress will be investigated. Then the court will make a pronouncement on your claim.
“You can't say that because an electoral officer has told you about declaring the result under duress, the person should be called back to declare the results again. It doesn't happen anywhere,” he said.
The presser by Asiedu Nketiah comes on the back of the decision by the EC to announce the NPP parliamentary candidates for the Fanteakwa North and Akwatia constituencies as winners of the December 7, 2024, polls, contrary to the earlier declarations.
Meanwhile, the NDC has secured an injunction against the re-collation of polling station results from the Nsawam-Adoagyiri constituency.
